Surfing in Sardinia: La Marinedda crowns the Italian champions

Surfing in Sardinia: La Marinedda crowns the Italian champions

The bay of Isola Rossa has been chosen as the venue for the 2024 Italian National Championships in shortboard and bodyboard, hosted by the Italian Surfing, Water Skiing, and Wakeboarding Federation.

Are you ready for a September to remember? The bay of La Marinedda is once again set to become the stage for Italian and international surfing, hosting the twentieth edition of Italy’s longest-running surf contest, the Marinedda Surf Open. But this year, there’s something extra special: for the first time, the MarineddaBay Open will be part of the official championship of the FISSW – Italian Surfing, Water Skiing, and Wakeboarding Federation, a decisive event to crown the Italian champions in shortboard and bodyboard!

The waiting period begins on 15 September, and the anticipation is already high. The best surfers, both Italian and international, are fine-tuning their boards to tackle the powerful waves of the Sardinian North Shore. Imagine the adrenaline: 64 athletes ready to battle it out in one of Sardinia’s most spectacular bays, with 32 male and 16 female surfers competing in shortboard, and 8 athletes in each category of bodyboard. Registrations are open, but they close as soon as the green light is given!

We are delighted that Hotel Marinedda is among the local businesses that have made all this possible: The Marinedda Bay Open – 2024 National Shortboard and Bodyboard Championship is organised under the patronage of the Municipality of Trinità d’Agultu and the FISSW – Italian Surfing, Water Skiing, and Wakeboarding Federation, and is supported by Costa Rossa Sardinia and other businesses from our region.

The beach of La Marinedda ready to put on a show

La Marinedda is not just any bay. Since 2004, it has been a place where the history of Italian surfing has been written on its red porphyry rocks, and this year it’s set to write a new chapter. Think about it: Leonardo Fioravanti, Francisco Porcella, Roberto D’Amico, Angelo Bonomelli… These are just a few of the big names who have surfed and won here. And then there’s Eric Rebiere, two-time European champion, who has left his mark on two editions of the contest.
Born as a simple promotional event in 2004, thanks to Asd Marineddabay, this competition has grown year after year, becoming a benchmark in the competitive surfing scene. And now, with its beach that resembles a natural amphitheatre and its fast and powerful beach break waves, the Marinedda Surf Open is set to make history by awarding the 2024 FISSW national titles.

The challenge is on: the waves of La Marinedda are ready to test even the most experienced surfers, while the audience enjoys a unique spectacle. And as tradition dictates, the grand finale will be a memorable party on the beach of La Marinedda, with the sun setting behind Isola Rossa, offering everyone a magical and unforgettable atmosphere.

Aggius is easily reachable in twenty minutes by car from Hotel Marinedda.

Market and local crafts & gastronomic traditions

This weekly event, held every Tuesday evening throughout the summer, is an opportunity to enjoy a complete cultural experience, discovering the tradition, art, and hospitality of Gallura. The heart of the event is the evening market along Via Roma, which transforms into a lively open-air market. Here you will find many artisanal products, from traditional Aggius carpets to unique jewellery made with local materials. You can discover wooden and inlaid handicrafts, cork works, scented candles, genuine jams, and typical costumes. You can also admire collections of swimwear and beach towels inspired by the designs and colours of traditional carpets.

A village of history and beauty

The village also offers a journey into culture and history. Aggius, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, is nestled among majestic granite rocks and cork forests. This picturesque village is known for its intertwined alleys, hidden squares, ancient churches, and museums that tell an ancient story.

While strolling through the granite alleys, you can discover murals and artworks by Sardinian artists like Simone Sanna and Josephine Sassu. Everything began with Maria Lai’s stay in Aggius. The project AAAperto has now transformed Aggius into an open-air museum, with contributions from famous artists such as Tellas, Giovanni Campus, Rosanna Rossi, Zaza Calzia, and many others. The village’s museums, including the MEOC and the Museum of Banditry, offer a fascinating journey into the past: the MEOC, one of the largest ethnographic museums on the island, hosts a “traditional house” and collections of costumes and choral songs, while the Museum of Banditry recounts the compelling history of local banditry, celebrated in the novel “Il Muto di Gallura” and in the film by Matteo Fresi.

Sport Fishing and Whale Watching: pure thrills on the Costa Rossa

With its beaches, Northern Sardinia is a haven for relaxation lovers, but not only. For fishing enthusiasts, adventures start early because, as they say, the early bird catches the worm.

Holidaymakers and locals, beginners or experienced fishermen: what matters in a fishing trip is the right company. To spend a day in the spirit of sport, but also to admire the coast from a privileged perspective and, if lucky, to spot specimens of fin whales and dolphins. Beautiful memories that will stay in everyone’s mind.

Adventures in contact with nature, along stretches of pristine sea rich in fish in the Gulf of Asinara. Starting from Isola Rossa, a small fishing village in the heart of the Red Coast, named after the small island it overlooks. From the port of the village, the fisherman of Poseidon Fishing set off: prestigious boats, the best equipment and the assistance of an experienced and professional crew to handle every type of catch.

Sport Fishing and Whale Watching: pure thrills on the Costa Rossa
Sport Fishing and Whale Watching: pure thrills on the Costa Rossa

Among the techniques that offer the greatest thrills is offshore trolling, to be carried out in the deeper waters between the Gulf of Asinara and the Strait of Bonifacio, in search of trophy prey: tunas, longfin tunas, spearfish, and dolphin fish. More refined is the coastal trolling, which can offer great satisfaction with catches like amberjacks, snappers, barracudas, little tunny, and tunas. The currents between Northern Sardinia and the Strait of Bonifacio provide the perfect setting for practicing vertical jigging, a technique reserved for true sports enthusiasts, and day and night drifting for catching giant tunas, swordfish, and large amberjacks.

Sport Fishing and Whale Watching: pure thrills on the Costa Rossa
Sport Fishing and Whale Watching: pure thrills on the Costa Rossa
The secret lies in the waiting, often made more enjoyable with a good glass of Vermentino di Gallura and some bolentino fishing. This technique is most suitable for beginners and those who love spending time on a boat or enjoying the sea. Even more so if the waters are those of the La Maddalena Archipelago and the magnificent coast of the Gulf of Asinara, rich in pandoras, forkbeards, sea breams, groupers, and giltheads. More discreet seabeds, but populated with groupers, common seabreams, John Dory, and smooth-hounds are found off the coast between Sardinia and Corsica, a sanctuary for lovers of deep-sea bolentino fishing.
And if you happen to not catch anything big, the satisfaction will come from some spectacular sightings. Although many are unaware, off the coast of Gallura, you can admire fin whales, sea turtles, tunas, and dolphins. All this is thanks to a fleet of boats that do not compromise on safety, space, practicality, and comfort. The pride of the fleet is the RIVIERA 4000 off-shore, a spacious and safe 14-meter vessel with a sporty and elegant design. Its great stability and the very large cockpit equipped with a fighting chair make it suitable for any type of deep-sea fishing.
